Premier Health Plus Supplements Your Knowledge of Vitamins

Premier Health Plus, an Adaptive Marketing LLC® membership program, reminds consumers that vitamins are important not only for kids, but also for adults of any age. Fortunately for PremierHealthPlus members, access to savings on all sorts of vitamins and nutritional supplements is only a click away.

Vitamins are substances we all need for our bodies to function efficiently and maintain a good physical shape. Ideally, healthy eating habits should be enough to feed the body with all the nutrients it needs, but that’s often not the case. Chemicals added to the soil, along with processing, heat and light, can destroy the vitamins found in vegetables, fruits, meat and poultry. “That’s why it’s recommended that people take some extra supplements, at any age,” as Carlos Arango, M.D., tells Premier Health Plus.

In 1994, the U.S. Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, which defined vitamins as dietary supplement and required that a Percent Daily Value (PDV) be shown on food labels. Beyond checking the PDV on labels, Dr. Arango also emphasizes the importance of knowing what vitamins to take and in what quantities, which depends in part on risk factors and previous illnesses. He recommends talking to a doctor and keeping up-to-date on new research and information about the health benefits of vitamins.

Premier Health Plus offers practical information on vitamins and other nutrients:

-- Vitamins are divided in two categories, based on the way they are absorbed by the body: water-soluble and fat-soluble. The water-soluble ones are the B-complex and vitamin C, which need to be taken regularly since they easily dissolve in the water we take every day and are therefore eliminated daily. The fat-soluble ones remain stored in the liver once they’ve dissolved in fat. Vitamins that fit in this group include vitamins A, D, E and K.

-- The U.S Public Health Service suggests that all women of childbearing age consume 104 mg of folic acid each day, to reduce their risk of having a baby affected with spina bifida or other neural tube defects.

-- Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Research shows that consuming antioxidants, along with folic acid, vitamin C (as ascorbic acid), B12, B6 and CoQ-10 can play a large role in balancing homocysteine levels in the body, a chemical that is thought to contribute to heart disease. All of these vitamins help prevent the development of atherosclerosis and hypertension.

-- Calcium and the coenzyme Q-10 are proven to reduce the risk of cancer. Q-10 has increased the survival rate of patients with cancer of the pancreas, lung, colon, rectum and prostate. Calcium prevents the absorption of bile acids and fatty acids in the colon, cutting the risk of colon cancer.

-- Vitamins A and E are crucial for the correct development of eyesight. Vitamin E protects against cataracts and macular degeneration, and a deficiency of vitamin A can cause night blindness.

-- Vitamin C is a major antioxidant present in the surface of the lung, so it plays a protective role for these organs, aiding in the prevention and treatment of asthma and other respiratory disorders, such as the common cold and a number of other functions in the body.

-- To maintain healthy bones and normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorous, vitamin D is a good choice. This vitamin aids the absorption of calcium and promotes bone mineralization.
